This is a beautiful piece featuring a contemporary khotan design. The city of khotan was strategically placed on the Silk Road and I think this is one of the reasons that these beautiful rugs feature so many different design elements, including both floral and geometric motifs. The fusion of central Asian, Iranian and Chinese influence that can be recognised within the khotan design blend so well and feel naturally harmonious. The central medallion is a simple circle and yet this clever feature draws you into the rug itself and emanates a sense of harmony and tranquility as you take in the beautiful combination of sky blue and mulberry. The paired back design within the central field really lets the background colour make its own statement and the wonderful abrash of the wool can be clearly seen and enjoyed. There are three borders, the first of which has a strong geometric floral design, the second is pictorial, depicting a simple flower and stem and the third is a geometric repeat of a hexagonal lozenge which neatly frames the central field. It is these little details that I find thoroughly enjoyable. The colour palette of this piece is very unusual and beautiful. I really love that these unexpected colours combine so gloriously and echo the same harmonious balance found within the design. Gosh! What an absolute beauty! Em x

This Karakul rug is from a very limited production by Afghan weavers.
Hand knotted using locally sourced wool, that is gently washed with water and soap, then hand spun and dyed using natural colourants from plants, berries and madder root.

We only make hand knotted rugs: no shortcuts and no hand tufting. Quality and good design is incredibly important in creating beautiful yet sustainable products.
