DAMASCUS ROSE MAMLUK - 419cm x 305cm (13'9 x 10')
MAMLUK RUGS![]()
This is a beautiful contemporary Afghan hand knotted piece with a Mamluk design. The origins of the Mamluk was a bit of a mystery until relatively recently when it was eventually traced back on a fascinating journey through time to the Mamluk rule of Egypt and Syria between 1250 and 1517 CE. The origins of these beautifully intricate carpets was shrouded in mystery until pieced together through snippets of information collected including clues found in art belonging to the Medici's in Florence and even a Pope's personal shopping list which reassuringly must have looked something like mine (full of carpets!). The Mamluk Sultan Qaitbay was a man after my own heart as he loved carpets and started his own luxurious rug producing centre il Cairo. Gathering together the most talented weavers and artisans the Mamluk carpets were created. As you can see they feature a large central medallion surrounded with an eight pointed star, the central field is filled with wonderful geometric ornamentations. Originally they would have been much simpler in colour tones such as red, blue and ochre.
The piece which I am sat on here is the most beautiful shade of Damascus rose. What a beauty and what a story! The size is 419cm x 305cm
