This shy beauty does not photograph well. I think that is one of the reasons that I love this piece so much. It’s like a secret she will not share so frivolously and demands a real life audience to really appreciate the truly complex colours within. The rich burnt orangey tones are so deep and concentrated and full of abrash which really intensifies the textural quality and works to draw you in to its depths. Believe me when I say it’s like being enveloped in an earthy, smoky, spicy and sweet embrace. I have yet to put her online but all of her details will be found on the website hopefully this evening. This piece is 360 cm x 270 cm and was carefully knotted by the very talented Afghan weavers who have such a wonderful eye for colour!
This Karakul rug is from a very limited production by Afghan weavers.
Hand knotted using locally sourced wool, that is gently washed with water and soap, then hand spun and dyed using natural colourants from plants, berries and madder root.
